“Community Powered” campaign raises awareness of public power

MPUA member electric utilities are encouraged to participate in the new “Community Powered” national campaign to raise awareness of public power. The campaign began in October, and public power communities across the country are implementing the campaign through December of this year.

  • The theme of the campaign is “Community Powered”
  • This is an awareness campaign to help member utilities emphasize that their utility is community-owned and gives back to the community. They can reach business and residential customers, governing body members, policymakers, and other key influencers in the community.
  • The American Public Power Association has a full and growing array of campaign strategies, tools, and resources for your use. Start by taking a look at their Awareness Campaign webpage, where they give you an idea of what to do and where to find resources.
  • The special campaign website is WeAreCommunityPowered.com. You can drive your customers and stakeholders to this site (which is not branded to APPA or any specific entity) to learn more about public power. This website includes a map of public power utilities across the country, with links back to utility websites.
  • The campaign site also has a Utility Resources section with materials for utilities to download and use (NO special login or password is required). Infographics and tip sheets on engaging local media and boosting social media posts can help you know how to get your message out, and campaign graphics can boost visibility of your utility throughout town.   • If you have the budget, you can even order some branded #CommunityPowered t-shirts, stickers, magnets, and even superhero capes — templates and instructions are available HERE.

The Community Powered campaign is ideal for implementation through social media and local community events and activities. Member utilities can start getting involved in the campaign by doing three things:

  1. Post on social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) about what the utility does for the community. Always remember to use #CommunityPowered, the hashtag that will tie all utility voices together.
  2. Encourage utility customers to share what locally owned electricity means for them on their own Instagram and Twitter accounts. By posting with #CommunityPowered they are automatically entered into a national social media contest with weekly drawings for prizes between Oct 1 and Nov 30.   3. Plan one or more community outreach activities — hold a public event or open house, volunteer with local projects and causes, etc. The holidays are around the corner and offer plenty of opportunities.
