Lineworkers from Carthage and Centralia recognized April 9 on the House Floor with a proclamation sponsored by Rep. Cody Smith of Carthage.

April 9, 2018 was “Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day”, recognized in state law every year on the first Monday in April. Lineworkers from municipal utilities, rural electric cooperatives and investor-owned utilities were on hand to help celebrate the day at the Capitol building in Jefferson City, as proclamations honoring lineworkers were made in both the Senate and the House of Representatives.

Lineworkers from MPUA member utilities at Carthage Water and Electric Plant and the City of Centralia enjoyed a tour of the Capitol building, visited with legislators from their districts, and were recognized on the floors of both legislative bodies as proclamations were read. At the third-floor rotunda area, staff from MPUA, co-ops and IOUs spent some of the afternoon providing public information and serving ice cream to visitors and staff of many Capitol offices.

Below is the text of a proclamation presented on the floor of the House of Representatives by Rep. Cody Smith of Carthage (R-District 163), making special mention of the public service contributions by lineworkers from MPUA member cities, including local public outreach activities and mutual aid recovery work after hurricanes struck Florida and the Caribbean in the last year.

Missouri House of Representatives

Whereas, the profession of lineworker is steeped in personal, family, and professional tradition; and

Whereas, Missouri’s municipal utility lineworkers, in eighty-six municipalities throughout the state, work with thousands of volts of electricity high atop power lines twenty-four hours a day, 365 days a year, to keep electricity flowing; and

Whereas, Missouri municipal utility lineworkers often work under dangerous conditions far from their families to construct and maintain the energy infrastructure of the Show-Me State; and

Whereas, Missouri municipal utility lineworkers have a deep commitment to their communities often going beyond keeping the lights on, exemplified by Carthage lineworkers who annually educate elementary students on electric safety, and Hannibal lineworkers who organize a community cleanup annually; and

Whereas, Missouri’s municipal utility lineworkers are often the first responders during storms and other catastrophic events, working to make the scene safe for other public safety heroes; and

Whereas, in September 2017, a crew of thirty-six lineworkers from the seven Missouri cities of Columbia, Hannibal, Independence, Macon, Nixa, Poplar Bluff, and Trenton, member utilities in the Missouri Public Utility Alliance, responded generously to assist in electric system recovery efforts in Lakeland and Orlando, Florida in the wake of Hurricane Irma; and

Whereas, in November 2017 through February 2018, a crew of thirty-four lineworkers from four MPUA member utilities in the Missouri cities of Hannibal, Harrisonville, Independence and Macon assisted in electric system recovery efforts on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands after it sustained heavy damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria; and

Whereas, Missouri’s municipal utility lineworkers put their lives on the line every day with little recognition from the community regarding the danger of their work; and

Whereas, the second Monday of April is designated in state law as an annual observance of Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day by the people of Missouri;

Now, therefore, be it resolved that we, the members of the Missouri House of Representatives, Ninety-ninth General Assembly, join in extending our most hearty congratulations to Missouri’s municipal utility lineworkers as they proudly celebrate Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day on April 9, 2018; and

Be it further resolved that the Chief Clerk of the Missouri House of Representatives be instructed to prepare a properly inscribed copy of this resolution for presentation during Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day.
