(an opinion/editorial)

If the power is on where you’re reading this, you have a lineworker to thank.

(Use #thankalineworker  if you’re giving out your thanks using hashtags, these days.)

April 9, 2018 is “Missouri Lineworker Appreciation Day”, honoring the serious and vital work carried out by our electrical crews.

Our lineworkers do a difficult, dangerous job that really matters. Every day, lineworkers are at work handling thousands of volts of electricity high atop power lines, and working with those lines that run underground. The job requires special training and skill. It’s also a job they must perform safely in all kinds of weather conditions, at any hour of the day or night.

In addition to their daily hard work of installing and repairing our power connections, lineworkers are critical members of the community of first responders. When trouble strikes, the job of a lineworker is often to head toward a scene of danger, to keep the power on or to make conditions safe for other first responders like police, firefighters and emergency medical staff. When called upon, many of these Missouri lineworker hometown heroes also assist neighboring communities, and even drive to distant states to assist in needed recovery from hurricanes and other natural disasters  at no cost to their home cities. Our recovery from weather-related emergencies and larger disasters would be difficult, and would take much longer without their commitment.

Hundreds of lineworkers working for MPUA member city electric crews are responsible for maintaining hundreds of miles of power lines for their cities. Their skill and dedication is a huge part of how each city is able to serve the community with reliable, safe, affordable electricity to homes and businesses.  These hometown heroes put their lives on the line every day. They deserve our thanks.
