MPUA staff participated in Water Week, held in Washington, D.C. from March 21 – 23, 2017. The week of advocacy is organized by many of the nation’s leading water organizations, including the Water Environment Federation (WEF), American Water Works Association (AWWA), and the National Association of Clean Water Agencies (NACWA).

MPUA staff made office visits to three Missouri representatives as part of the week’s National Water Policy Fly-in. We met with:  Joe Tvrdy, Legislative Director for Rep. Vicki Hartzler (R) [MO-4]; Trey McKenzie, Legislative Director for Rep. Blaine Luetkemeyer (R) [MO-3]; and Nick Christensen, Legislative Assistant for Rep. Sam Graves (R) [MO-6].  Missouri was very fortunate to be accompanied by Claudio Ternieden (WEF’s Director of Regulatory Affairs) for the Hartzler and Leutkemeyer office visits.  Missourians showed in force for the visit with Rep. Grave’s staff.  Charlie Stevens (KCMO Water Services), Dr. Todd Brewer (City Utilities of Springfield), Randy Moore (St. Louis), and MPUA staff.

At all of the meetings, we discussed the following items: 1) a desired increase to the funding levels for the State Revolving Loan Fund program nation-wide; 2) retention of tax-exempt status for municipal bonds; 3) increased concerns about affordability and utility rates; 4) prioritization and implementation of infrastructure renewal and rehabilitation; 5) cuts to USEPA proposed in President Trump’s Budget Blueprint; 6) and the unwinding of the Clean Water Rule (formerly known as the Waters of the U.S. (WOTUS) rulemaking).
