In early April the American Public Power Association honored eight Missouri municipal utilities with a “certificate of excellence” for reliable performance, as shown by comparing their outage records against nationwide data gathered by the Energy Information Administration. The seven utilities honored included those for the cities of Chillicothe, Harrisonville, Higginsville, Jackson, Macon, Marshall, Rolla and Trenton.

The MPUA member utilities were among 121 public power utilities nationwide that earned the recognition from APPA. These utilities kept track of their reliability data using APPA’s  eReliability Tracker, a web-based subscription service that lets utilities collect, categorize and summarize their outage information. Cities in the Missouri Public Power Pool (MoPEP) are encouraged to subscribe to the eReliability Tracker to track their outage information. Currently, 14 MoPEP members use the tracking tool.

For this APPA “certificate of excellence” recognition, outage and restoration data were gathered using eReliability Tracker. APPA then compared the data to national statistics tracked by the U.S. Energy Information Administration for all types of electric utilities. Utilities received the certificate of excellence for placing in the top 25 percent of reliability nationwide, as measured against the national data on EIA’s System Average Interruption Duration Index, or SAIDI.

Public power utilities have a strong overall track record of reliability, said Michael Hyland, APPA’s senior vice president of Engineering Services. Nationwide, the average public power customer has their lights out for less than half the time, compared to other types of utilities. “This recognition helps demonstrate public power’s commitment to reliable electric service,” Hyland said.
