In a July 18 ceremony in Columbia, the American Public Works Association presented plaques to Columbia Water & Light, Columbia’s Public Works Department, and the Columbia Community Development Department, for leadership in the field of public works. The departments were recognized for APWA’s recent accreditation of Columbia Water & Light and Columbia’s Community Development department, as well as the re-accreditation of the city’s Public Works Department. Plaques were presented to Columbia Water & Light’s director Tad Johnsen, public works director David Nichols, and community development director Tim Teddy.
APWA has 112 accredited public works departments in North America, including seven in the state of Missouri. The city’s Public Works Department was first accredited in 2001, becoming the first accredited department in Missouri and fifth accreditation in the nation at that time. It has since been re-accredited four times.
APWA’s accreditation program requires that employees perform a self-evaluation against nationally accepted standards, and make adjustment to the City’s policies, practices and procedures to make sure they are consistent with national standards. After the self-evaluation, a review team visits to conduct an evaluation.
